Silence is right, we are losing out high tone around here. Before it's regained, I have to point out The George W. Bush Conspiracy Generator. You too can -- in seconds -- generate your own conspiracies. Here's mine:
George W. Bush caused the Cubs to lose to the Marlins in Game 7 of the National League Championship Series so that Rush Limbaugh and white men could kill minorities.
Hat tip to Melissa at ZogbyBlog.
George W. Bush lowered taxes so that big corporations, the Jews, Rush Limbaugh, Republicans, and Ann Coulter could oppress Iraqis.
This is my Conspiracy. Thanks jk.
Posted by: Riza Rivera at January 21, 2004 01:18 PMRiza, you don't need a "conspiracy generator" to come up with that one. Just follow the Dem primary coverage!
Posted by: dagny at January 22, 2004 10:34 AMHere's an example: I just watched Howard Dean lamenting that the "Clear Skies Initiative" claims to reduce pollution by 25%, but it does so by reclassifying CO2 as no longer a pollutant. (If CO2 is a pollutant then why have we not outlawed dry ice, fire extinguishers and soft drinks??) Then he says, "It's no wonder these people have a trillion dollar deficit since they don't know how to add!" Uh... non-sequitur alert.
Posted by: johngalt at January 22, 2004 10:45 AMIt was too scary for me because people I know believe stuff like.
Posted by: Riza Rivera at January 22, 2004 01:18 PMIt's about levels my friend. The CO2 released from dry ice, fire extinguishers, and soft drinks is insignificant compared to that generated from combustion sources. Your body needs water to survive, but drink too much and it will kill you.
I noticed that the latest EPA report grudgingly admits that global warming is real and that greenhouse gases in the troposhpere are indeed causing it. Conservative think tanks running out of scientists willing to argue against the evidence?
Posted by: Silence Dogood at January 26, 2004 09:10 AMSilence, Silence, Silence. The EPA "admission" you cite was a mistake by a bureaucratic organization, staffed by Clinton-ites and headed by a liberal Republican.
The facts are all against global warming. The computer models have predicted symptoms that have not appeared. Long-term tree-ring data point to warmer times long before fossil fuels were used widely. I don't think TechCentralStation and AEI have run out of defenders but I fear we have run out of objective media people who will note or report the facts.
Global warming, bah humbug! Tell 'em you read it on Berkeley Square Blog!
Posted by: jk at January 26, 2004 01:56 PMJK,
I am not sure to which "facts" you are refering. Yes, there have been climate changes in the past before the burning of fossil fuels, but the rate of change has never approached the current rate. The current agreement of 99% of the atmospheric scientists is that the lower atmosphere is warming and that we are causing it. This sceintific analysis includes understanding of past climate history, present changes in temperature and surface features such as glaciers and snow pack, atmospheric chemistry and photochemistry all leading to the same conclusion: we are causing the lower atmosphere (troposhpere) to warm. The are certainly still areas of uncertainty in our current understanding of the whole puzzle, but taken as a whole our current scientific evidence is overwhelming. It seems that the main uncertainties are political not scientific.
Posted by: Silence Dogood at January 26, 2004 03:02 PMI remember thinking recently, "at least we don't have to debate global warming anymore. Nobody with any sense still thinks that theory is based on objective science." Alas. Read Bjorn Lomborg.
Only 99% of "the" atmospheric scientists agree? Even backward dictators can manage 100% agreement! But then that is politics and not science. Whoa, what a coincidence!
