I don't think I'll jump to Kerry or anything but...
Tonight was a disappointment after last night's oratorical pyrotechnics. Tonight we got a laundry list of increased spending. That made mea bit nervous.
Arnold did well, but not as good as Senator McCain or Mayor Giuliani. I like the twins but have to go with Bill Kristol: they did not advance the GOP. Laura was great but I think everybody knows her.
Doesn't surprise me too much for a guy who's fiscally liberal and socially conservative. 95% of W's message is about the war on terror because he can't separate himself in the spending department. If he gets into a debate about tax cuts he's not in a great position because he's painted as fiscally irresponsible (even I partially agree with that). Expressing his social views alienate the rational Republicans looking for separation of church and state.
You can't promise more spending as a party and then claim that tax cuts will eventually lead to fiscal conservatism.
Posted by: saint stephen at September 1, 2004 07:58 AMApparently Libby Dole spoke before Arnold but I missed it. I also apparently missed the spending spree you refer to in Arnold and Laura's speeches. Would you care to be more specific?
Posted by: johngalt at September 1, 2004 07:59 AMI heard Liddy on the way home. (C-Span radio on XM, pretty cool!) She did pretty well. She started with a promise to stay behind the podium.
Ahnold and Laura are innocent. Rod Paige, whom I admire greatly, championed the additional spending on education. Senator Frist talked up the Prescription drug bill.
If discussed in the context of reform, these are Republican achievements. But if we're going to brag about spending increases, we're playing on the Democrats' home turf.
What's this 'we' stuff, kimosabe? Saint Stephen is going to be enjoying the Libertarian Utopia of the Kerry administration for the next four years...
