Quote of the Day

[USMC Lt. JP Blecksmith]'s sister, Christina, quoted Gen Geo. S Patton, Jr., in her eulogy, "Let me not mourn for the men who have died fighting, but rather let me be glad that such heroes lived." Can there be any better remembrance for these fallen heroes? Indeed, let all of America be glad that they have lived, and died for all of us.

Nice password today, JK. Arrgh.

I agree with the general and his modern admirer but I have to make a subtle correction to your sentiment: ...let all of America be glad that they have lived, and died for our shared values."

Soldiers do not die as sacrificial animals for the sake of any other person, but in defense of the ideals which they hold as a value - without which their lives would be unsatisfying. It is the source of Patrick Henry's sentiment: "Give me liberty, or give me death."

None of these soldiers has died "for" me, and neither did Jesus Christ.

The password is the name of a character on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" but now you have me thinking that I *could* come up with passwords to offend everybody, that might be fun (right now: Buffy names, guitars, jazz acts).

I'd be careful correcting General Patton, though, you might get slapped.

The values, the liberty are for us and those that might join us -- I can't say I am disturbed by the construction.

But I AGREED with the general. My disagreement was with your construction, "and died for all of us." And I hinted at the potential source of your feeling, i.e. the crucifiction.

Gotcha. It's hard to tell they way I posted it, but that was a quote was from the sister.

Glad to hear you won't be slapped...

Ah, I see. The offending words weren't actually from the sister, but from the writer of the letter to Hewitt, one Gary Irwin.

I'm glad that Patton lived. What a cowboy!
